Frequently Asked Questions
Not sure where to start? You’re not alone.
Here are answers to the questions we hear most often from storytellers.
BEFORE WE BEGIN
Every manuscript, author, and publishing path is different. These answers cover the questions we hear most often, but if you are still unsure where to start, a conversation is always welcome.
WORKING WITH REED PRESS
What services does Reed Press offer?
Reed Press provides editorial services, author coaching, and content strategy support for writers, businesses, and organizations. Our work includes developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, proofreading, manuscript evaluations, author coaching, ghostwriting, content development, and strategic editorial consulting.
How do I know whether I need editing or coaching?
Editing focuses on the manuscript itself. Coaching focuses on the writer and the decisions surrounding the work. If you need help strengthening a draft, editing is usually the right fit. If you need guidance, accountability, publishing advice, or help determining your next steps, coaching may be more beneficial. Many clients ultimately use a combination of both.
Do you work with first-time authors?
Absolutely. Many of our clients are writing their first book, navigating publishing for the first time, or exploring an idea that is still taking shape. Our goal is to meet authors where they are and provide clear, practical guidance throughout the process.
What genres do you work with?
We work with a variety of fiction and nonfiction projects, including memoir, business books, historical works, personal narratives, thought leadership, and genre fiction. If you are unsure whether your project is a good fit, we are happy to discuss it before moving forward.
Do you use AI in client work?
Reed Press is committed to human-centered creative and editorial work. For authors, all editing, coaching, manuscript evaluation, and feedback are performed by experienced human professionals.
In certain organizational projects, we may use AI-assisted tools when specifically requested by the client. However, all editorial judgment, strategy, and creative direction remain firmly in human hands.
EDITORIAL SERVICES
What type of editing do I need?
That depends on where your manuscript is in the writing process. Early drafts often benefit from developmental editing, while more polished manuscripts may need line editing, copyediting, or proofreading. If you are unsure, we can help determine the most appropriate level of support.
What is developmental editing?
Developmental editing examines the big-picture elements of a manuscript. This includes structure, organization, pacing, narrative flow, character development, argument strength, and overall reader experience. It is often the most transformative stage of the editorial process.
What is the difference between line editing and copyediting?
Line editing focuses on style, clarity, tone, and readability at the sentence and paragraph level. Copyediting focuses on grammar, punctuation, consistency, usage, and technical correctness. Both improve the manuscript, but they address different aspects of the writing.
Do you offer proofreading?
Yes. Proofreading is typically the final stage before publication and focuses on identifying remaining errors, formatting inconsistencies, and minor issues that may have been missed during earlier editing stages.
How long does editing take?
Turnaround times vary depending on manuscript length, project complexity, and current availability. Most projects are scheduled in advance, and estimated timelines are provided before work begins.
EDITORIAL PROCESS
Will hiring an editor change my voice?
A good editor strengthens your voice rather than replacing it. Our role is to help authors communicate more clearly and effectively while preserving the qualities that make their work uniquely theirs. We refine the writing—we do not rewrite the author.
How do you determine which level of editing I need?
We evaluate each manuscript individually. Factors such as draft quality, project goals, publication plans, and the author’s experience all influence our recommendations. If you are unsure where to begin, we can help identify the most appropriate service.
How many editors review my work?
The number of editors involved depends on the scope of the project and the services selected. Some projects are completed by a single editor, while others may involve multiple editorial reviews. Any collaboration is coordinated internally to ensure consistency and maintain the integrity of the manuscript.
What is included in an editorial review?
Each editorial review includes detailed feedback tailored to the level of service selected. Depending on the project, this may include developmental recommendations, in-line comments, revision suggestions, grammar and style corrections, editorial notes, or a comprehensive editorial letter outlining strengths, concerns, and next steps.
Can you guarantee publication, representation, or sales?
No. No reputable editor, coach, agent, or publisher can guarantee publication success. We can help authors strengthen their work, improve their understanding of the industry, and make informed decisions, but publishing outcomes ultimately depend on many factors outside any editor’s control.
Will my manuscript be accepted for publication if I hire Reed Press?
No. Editorial services and publishing opportunities are separate. Working with Reed Press does not guarantee publication through any publisher. Our role is to help authors strengthen their work and make informed decisions about their publishing journey.
What if I'm not ready for editing yet?
That’s perfectly normal. Many authors seek coaching, manuscript evaluations, or strategic guidance before investing in a full edit. Part of our job is helping you determine what support will be most beneficial at your current stage of the writing process.
AUTHOR COACHING
What happens during a coaching session?
Coaching sessions are tailored to your goals. We may discuss manuscript development, publishing options, revision strategies, platform building, creative challenges, or project planning. Each session is designed to provide practical guidance and clear next steps.
Do I need a finished manuscript?
Not at all. Some clients arrive with a finished draft, while others have only an idea, outline, or partial manuscript. Coaching can be valuable at any stage of the writing process.
Can coaching help if I have not started writing?
Yes. In fact, many authors seek coaching before they begin writing. Coaching can help clarify your concept, identify your audience, refine your goals, and create a realistic plan for moving forward.
What should I bring to a session?
Bring whatever you have. This may include a manuscript, outline, proposal, notes, questions, or simply an idea you would like to explore. The more context you can provide, the more productive the conversation will be.
How do I book coaching?
Coaching sessions can be scheduled directly through our booking system. If you are unsure which option is right for you, we recommend starting with a complimentary introductory consultation to discuss your goals and determine the best next step. Visit our Author Coaching page to learn more and schedule a session.
